1) What is required to work for OPS Ltd?
All applicants
- must be aged 18 or over
- be able to provide a ten-year checkable history see question 8
- have a good command of the English language both written and verbal
- be able to provide a ten-year address history see question 27
- be willing to submit to a Criminal Records Bureau Check see question 17
- must have the right to work in the UK
- provide details of any criminal convictions see question 26
- You will have to provide at least two (2) forms of proof of identity and three (3) form of proof of address see question 12
- We operate a minimum entry level qualification for all staff of a NVQ Level 2 Qualification in Spectator Awareness, this will be offered to all staff virtually free of charge see question 5
Safety Steward
- all the above criteria and you must have completed and passed an SIA training course - see question 23
SIA Licensed Door Supervisor
- all the above criteria and you must have in your possession a valid front line SIA Door Supervisors License - see question 24
SIA Licensed Security Guard
- all the above criteria and you must have in your possession a valid front line SIA Security License - see question 24
2) How do I apply?
To apply for a position with the company go to the Recruitment Page and select a suitable position read the Key Criteria for the position and check the box at the bottom of the page to confirm that you have read and understand the criteria for the position and then click apply now and complete the online questionnaire and when completed click submit on the form.
3) Are there full time positions?
There are at present no full time positions within the company but currently we are only recruiting for part time casual staff
4) Do I have to have experience?
Although preferred experience is not essential as ongoing training will be given.
5) Do I have to do any training to carry out duties?
As a company we have introduced an entry level qualification for all of our team members, this is in line with industry practices and client requirement, the qualification is a NVQ level 2 (National Vocational Qualification) in Spectator Awareness, this will be provided in most cases free of charge, full support and assistance will be given!
As a steward completion of this qualification will enable you to move up to the position of Safety Steward which will increase your pay and prospects.
As a SIA Licensed Door Supervisor or Security Guard you will have already completed a Level 2 qualification in Door Supervision or Security Guarding as an existing holder of a level 2 qualification this will provide you with previous learning credits and will mean that they may be certain areas of learning that you will not be required to complete which will make the learning period easier and shorter!
The NVQ level 2 qualification (National Vocational Qualification) in Spectator Awareness is a nationally recognised qualification that will remain with you always.
NVQ Level 2 Qualification in Spectator Awareness training is offered to all staff free of charge, however there may be a small charge may for certification.
6) Do I have to have a driving licence?
It is not essential that applicants can drive or have their own car but it is always helpful as some shifts may finish late
7) Where will I be working?
Most of our work and venues are within the M25 or Travelcard Zones 1-6, we do also work in other areas. For work outside the M25 or Travelcard Zones 1-6 a travel allowance may be given.
8) What is a ten-year checkable history?
We work to BS 7858, the British Standard for Security screening of individuals employed in a security environment. This Code of Practice recommends that staff should be vetted for 5 years prior to the date of employment or back to secondary school. However due to current security risks and the nature of the work that we carry out on behalf of our clients, Optimum Protection Services Ltd screens all its staff for an additional five years in order to constantly maintain the safety and integrity/security of all our clients and their guests/customers.
9) What if my history is outside the UK?
You do not have to have lived or been a resident in the UK for 10 years to apply but we must be able to confirm you 10 year history or back to school in any country that you have been residing in. Please note that vetting from other countries may take longer see question 14.
10) What information will I need to provide?
You will need to be able to provide the following information depending on what you were doing at the time.
Education - please provide name, address and contact numbers of the establishment along with details of which course/s you were doing and if applicable your tutors name.
Employment - please provide company name, address and contact numbers of place of employment along with details of what position you held and if applicable the name of your manager/supervisor.
Unemployment - please provide name, address and contact numbers of the Job Centre/Benefit Office you were registered unemployed with and the benefit you were claiming and also the name of your advisor.
Any Gaps – If there any gaps in your history please indicate why, e.g.: Travelling, Raising children, Medical Issues, Job Hunting etc.
11) Do I need to provide this information if my history is outside the UK?
Yes all this information must also be provided for your 10-year or back to school history, for any references that we will need from outside the UK. It is vital that as much information is provided as possible.
12) What Documents will I need to provide?
You will have to provide at least two (2) forms of proof of identity and three (3) form of proof of address from the document list detailed below. For security of you documents you may during the application submission process provide clear photo copies or scan copies however you will be required to supply original copies of the documents at your interview if you are granted one:
- Passport
- Driving Licence both card and paper part (If applicable)
- Three proofs of your address issued within the last three months (Utility Bills, Council tax Bill, Bank Statement, a letter from Government Department)
- Proof of your right to work in the UK (If applicable)
- SIA Training Certificate (If applicable)
- SIA Licence Granted Letter (If applicable)
- SIA Licence Card (If applicable)
- UK Criminal Records Check (If applicable)
- Overseas Criminal Records Check (If applicable)
13) What is the recruitment process?
- Application Form sent to applicant
- Application returned to OPS if not fully completed then application will be rejected with no further communication
- Application assessed if successful an interview will be arranged; if unsuccessful then a letter will be sent
- Interview Conducted
- Application assessed following interview, if successful then letter will be sent to applicant and then vetting will be started; if unsuccessful then a letter will be sent
- Once most recent 5-years of history is confirmed candidate will be offered a probationary position, subject to satisfactory reference content
- Whilst on probationary position we will confirm the other 5 years of your history and once this is done your position will be confirmed, subject to satisfactory reference content
14) How long does the recruitment process take?
Once we have received your application we will let you know within 7 working days* if we are going to offer you an interview or if you have been unsuccessful.
Once interviewed we would send a letter out to you within 3 working days* notifying you of the outcome.
As we work to BS7858 the Vetting of Security staff we have a maximum of 13 weeks to complete all Vetting and Screening Checks.
Once you have been interview and we have made a decision that we would like to employ you. We must first complete the most recent 5 years of an applicants vetting within 4 weeks* and then the remaining 5 years must be confirmed within the next 8 weeks*.
*These times are subject to exceptions, for example how many references we have to send out, where we have to send them to, time taken for people to reply to reference requests etc
15) I have references from my previous employers/schools already, are these acceptable?
No we must obtain all references and confirm any details ourselves.
16) Is there anyway to make my application move faster?
All applications are dealt with in the order they arrive.
However if you are successful following an interview it can sometimes help matters if you contact the people involved in your history and explain to them that you have applied for a position with our company and that a reference will be coming soon and request that they deal with it as quickly as possible. It is also useful if you contact them to confirm the details of the people that we need to contact to obtain a reference.
17) What is a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Check?
This is a check carried out to see if you have any criminal convictions. Due to the nature of our work we do and the client base that we have such as working with children and young people at youth events for local authorities and being that we can also come into contact with vulnerable adults at any time hence an enhanced CRB Check is carried out on ALL STAFF.
If this check comes through and there are convictions on it, it does not automatically mean that we would not employ you. It would depend on lots of different factors, for example; type of offence, date of offence.
18) How much do I get paid?
Rates of pay are discussed when successful applicants come for their interview. There are two levels of pay rate; one for those on probationary position see question 30 and one for those whose position has been confirmed.
19) When do I get paid?
Staff are paid on a monthly basis one month in arrears. A payroll month runs from the 1st of the month to the last day of the month. Staff must complete a timesheet for all the shifts that they work and these must be received at the office by the 3rd of the following month. Payments are made by transfer from our bank to yours on the last day of the month following the month worked.
20) If I don’t send in my timesheets on time do I lose that money?
No - Any time sheets that are received late will then be processed for payment on the next payment run for the next month.
21) Will you deduct tax and National Insurance from my wages?
National Insurance and tax will be deducted from your wages and you will be issued a payslip detailing what has been deducted.
Students that are only working in the College/University holidays may be exempt from paying tax and if you believe you are then you should complete a P46(s) form, this can be obtained by clicking here.
Staff that do not provide a P45 will be pay tax at the Basic Rate of 22% and will be issued a tax code of BR. This will apply to staff who work for us as their second income.
22) How long is a shift?
Shift hours can vary from anything from 4 hours up to 14. However the minimum call time is 5 hours.
23) What is an SIA Training Course?
This is normally four day course that you have to take in order to apply for an SIA Licence. The course is job specific and will focus on the Roles and Responsibilities of a Door Supervisor or Security Guard and the other focus is on Communications Skills and Conflict Management.
24) What is an SIA Licence?
Since March 2006 it has been compulsory for anyone working in the role of Security Officer or Door Supervisor to be licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). To get an SIA licence you’ll need to attend an approved training course, sit examinations and undergo identity and criminal records checks. If you’ve got previous relevant qualifications you may be exempted from some or all of the new training. To find out more visit - www.the-sia.org.uk
25) What training do we do?
All staff that are employed with the company are expected to attend a 1 day induction training course. This would be to introduce you to key figures within the company and to familiarise you with company procedures.

26) I have a criminal record can I still apply?
Yes you can; if you have a criminal record it does not necessarily mean that you will not be employed by our company. However if you do have any convictions, warnings, cautions, absolute / conditional discharges, admonishments or charges awaiting trial for offences we will make our decision according to:
- How relevant the offences are to the position being applied for,
- How serious the offences were,
- How recent they were, and
- The actual sentence or disposal you received by the court for your conviction(s).
However if you do not state that you have a criminal conviction and then it is reported on a CRB Check see question 16 it is likely we would reject your application as any attempt to suppress or falsify information is regarded as extremely serious.
27) What is an address history?
All applicants must supply details of all the addresses that they have resided at within the last 10 years. This includes any addresses outside the UK.
28) As a casual am I covered by the company insurance?
Yes - Optimum Protection Services Ltd has both a full public and employee liability insurance cover which covers employees whilst they are working on behalf of the company whether it is as a full time member of staff or part time casual member.
29) Do you provide uniform?
Some items of uniform are provided by the Company, these are
- Company branded shirts for certain venues
- Company tie
- Company blazer
You are expected to provide your own
- Plain black trousers, not combats or jeans
- Plain black shoes or boots, not trainers
- Plain black socks
- Plain white shirt
Any items of company uniform issued to you will need to be signed for and will remain the property of the company. Whilst no charge is made for Company Branded items you will be charged for replacements for any items which are lost or damaged.
When you leave the company you must return all Company Branded items of uniform and any money owed to you for work done may be held until all items have been returned.
30) What duties will I have to carry out and your role?
Depending on the position the duties that you may be asked to do will vary this list is not exhaustive and is not site specific but it details the general duties that you may be asked to do at any of our venues or events:
Stewards may have to:
- Meet and greet clients & their customers
- Search people persons or belongings
- To protect life wherever possible by observing crowds, monitoring for signs of distress or overcrowding
- Report any spillages or build up of litter in your designated area that you believe may be unsafe or become unsafe
- Monitoring people entering and exiting buildings, gates, car parks, seating areas and premises & property
- To maintain logs of attendance at assignments
- Write incident reports when needed
- Patrol clients premises and report any theft, damage or dangers to the relevant person
- Record all patrol details
- Ensure customers sit in the correct seats
- Ensure gangways and exits are kept clear
- Assist with directing customers and visitors
- Report any unsuitable behaviour to the Company Supervisor
- By way of observation only assist with the prevention and deterring of crime
SIA Licensed Security Guards & Door Supervisors may have to do all of the above as well as:
- Ensure that only fit, proper and authorised persons enter the event or venue
- Deal with unacceptable behaviour at events and venues
- Prevent the theft and damage of clients and customers belongings and possessions
- Remove person or persons that are, on the premises or at the event unlawfully, behaving in an unlawful or unsuitable manner
